SOUTH BEND - Penny Lee Nawrocki, 59, of South Bend, IN, died at 2:31 AM Saturday, January 17, 2009, in her home following a battle with cancer. She was born on July 31, 1949, to James Kenneth and Barbara Ann (Shire) Walker in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident.

Penny graduated from LaSalle High School in 1967. Mrs. Nawrocki was currently employed in the accounting department at Walmart where she had worked for 10 years. Prior to that she had worked as a waitress and cook at the Louvered Door for 24 years.

On December 4, 1980, as Penny Lee Walker, she married Stanley A. Nawrocki in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is survived by her husband, Stanley A. Nawrocki of South Bend, IN; parents, James Kenneth and Barbara Ann Walker of South Bend, IN; mother-in-law, Mary Nawrocki of South Bend, IN; one son, Jeffrey A. (Stacie) Nawrocki of Tampa Bay, FL; one daughter, Trina M. Bloom of Ohio; four grandchildren, Garrett, Trent, Cheyanne and Jenay; two sisters, Vicki B. (Walter) Dorn of South Bend, IN, and Janet Kruk of South Bend, IN; two sisters-in-law, Georgene (Larry) Buchanan of South Bend, IN, and Shirley (David) Lauver of South Bend, IN; nieces, Amber and Colleen; and nephews, Scott, Rick and his wife, Angie, Keith, and Craig and wife, Laura.

Penny was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Alex Nawrocki.

Mrs. Nawrocki was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #357. She enjoyed catering, cross-stitching, traveling, and collecting angels. She was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs baseball fan. Penny also loved spending time with her dogs, Abby and Alley, and her kitty cat, Cubby. Penny donated her body for research to the Indiana University Medical Center Anatomical Education Program in Indianapolis, IN.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 20, in American Legion Post #357, 5414 W. Sample Street, South Bend, IN. The family would like to give special thanks to the Oncology Cancer Department; Dr. Robin Zon, M.D.; The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.; and to Melissa from Memorial Health Care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
