John played J-V basketball and ran track at Central before moving to LaSalle for his junior and senior years. He spent his elementary years at Oliver, where he wore uniform No. 6 as part of the city champion basketball team with Dwight Fulce, Kevin Harris, and Luther Harris.
After graduation, his family moved to Kansas City, Mo. His siblings included brothers Richard and Thomas Kirkendolph, Samuel Adkins, and Robert Royal, and two sisters, Alma Jean and Bessie, as well as three stepbrothers and five stepsisters.
John died July 15, 2008, in Kansas City. He had married Sally Marie Johnson on Feb. 9, 2006.
