Alvin Lee Armstrong

Feb. 8, 1953 - Jan. 1, 1979

Alvin Lee Armstrong, 25, former LaSalle and Indiana State University basketball star, was killed in an apartment fire New Year's Day in Salt Lake City, Utah, in which two other persons were killed.
Armstrong, who was a graduate student at the University of Utah, was visiting friends at the apartment when the fire broke out about 9:30 p.m., destroying the three-story building, according to Salt Lake City fire officials.
The building was part of a two building, 30-unit older complex, officials said. The building was engulfed in flames by the time fire fighters arrived on the scene and the roof and wall caved in before everyone could be safely evacuated. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but early indications are that if was caused by faulty electrical wiring, officials said.
Armstrong was a 1971 graduate of LaSalle High School, where he was a standout in basketball and track and graduated from Indiana State with a bachelor's degree in sociology.
He was born Feb. 8, 1953, in South Bend and had lived in Utah since September. He is survived by his wife, the former Beverly Hardiman; a son, Jason of Princeton, Ind.; two sisters, Noly J. and Glenda M. Armstrong, both of South Bend; two brothers, Wilbert G. of Michigan City and Allen O. Jr. of Huntsville, Ala, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Armstrong Sr. of South Bend.
Alford's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
