SOUTH BEND, IND. - December 3, 2002

Heintzelman, worker for city, dies in crash.

Dean Heintzelman, a building inspector for the city since 1984, died Monday morning when his car slid off an extremely icy road in the northwest part of St. Joseph County.

"He was just a great asset for the department," Building Commissioner Don Fozo said, speaking of Heintzelman as "a hard person to replace. It's hard to get someone with the kind of knowledge of building codes that you can trust. He had that kind of knowledge."

Heintzelman, 44, was on his way to work, driving south on Redwood Road, when he apparently lost control of the car a quarter-mile north of Alden Road, according to Maj. Robert Finn of the St. Joseph County Police Department.

Heintzelman wasn't far from his home on Brush Trail.

The car slid off on the east side of the road, struck two trees and flipped over, Finn said. A passerby found the accident and called police about 7:30 a.m. Heintzelman, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was difficult to even stand up on ice-covered Redwood, said Finn, who'd gone to the accident scene.

Police spent much of Monday chasing after cars that had slid off the roads throughout the day, mostly resulting in minor injury, as snow continued to fall.
