Ms. Verda Lee Bailey was born November 18, 1952, in South Bend, Indiana, to Rosie and Eddie L. Bailey Sr. Verda was the fifth child of 12 children. She was a beloved mother, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and beloved faithful companion.

Verda graduated from Lasalle High School. After graduation she attended Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana, where she received her Baccalaureate Degree in Early Childhood Education. She worked numerous years for The South Bend Community School Corporation and Emmanuel Day Care. She worked for over 10 years for the Bendix Corporation and she was also employed by Imagineering Corporation. She was revered and honored by many as “Mama Verda” in her neighborhood and community.

She so loved her family, and her specialty hobbies were cooking for her family and hosting large family gatherings. She was always the life of the party. Her most cherished and heartfelt passion was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Verda enjoyed working and educating children wherever she encountered them. Verda died unexpectedly in her home.

Verda leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Tanikka (Marcus) Williams Sr.; one son, Gregory D. Broadnax Jr.; life-long companion, Gregory Broadnax Sr.; one brother, Eddie Lee Bailey Jr.; five sisters: Fines Bailey-Mosby, Barbara Reese, Joyce (Roger) Giles, Katherine Bailey, and Cynthia (Edward)Thomas, all of South Bend, Indiana; sister-in-law, Anita Bailey of Indianapolis, Indiana; brother-in-law, Maurice Mosby of Perrysburg, Ohio; 11 grandchildren: Marcus Jr., Markayla, Markeisha, Taylor, Tyler, Gregory III, Ge'Monee, Geimisha, Ge'Rell, Ge'Marr, and Ge'Leeyah; and three great-grandchildren, Kensley, Makhi, and Chyna. Verda will be missed by a host of nieces and nephews who cherished and dearly loved her as well as many relatives and friends. Verda leaves a legacy of love that our family will always cherish.

Verda was preceded in death by her son, Jamarr Broadnax; her parents, Rosie and Eddie L. Bailey Sr.; three brothers: Elvie, George, and Arthur Bailey; two sisters: Eddie Mae and Patricia Bailey; maternal grandparents, Richard and Daisy Taylor; paternal grandparents, Leslie and Vernita Bailey; brother-in-law, Robert Reese; and one great-niece, Briana Bailey.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2021, at Pentecostal Cathedral C.O.G.I.C. Visitation at 9:00 a.m. and service at 10:00 a.m. Alford's Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
