Frederick Paul Tamke - Class Of 1967

LaSalle 1967 Frederick Paul Tamke

Aug. 12, 1949 - Apr. 4, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Frederick Paul Tamke, 66, passed away in his home on Monday morning, April 4th. Fred was born in South Bend, Indiana. His parents were Paul and Evelyn Tamke. He was a graduate of the former LaSalle High School and also graduated from Indiana University where he received a degree in business administration, majoring in accounting. After graduating from IU, he attended the University of Notre Dame graduate school of business where he graduated with a master's degree in business administration (MBA).

After receiving his MBA from Notre Dame, Fred accepted a position with American Motors Corporation in Southfield, Michigan, as a financial analyst. He later entered the banking industry and became assistant controller of First Interstate Bank in Los Angeles, California. After spending several years in California, Fred decided to return home to the South Bend area where he worked with his brother, Jim, in their accounting and law offices.

Fred was very devoted to his family. After his mother passed away in 2004, he took an early retirement in order to care for his younger brother, Brian, who has special needs. In addition to helping Brian with his daily activities, he loved to take Brian to concerts in various cities throughout the Midwest, including Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Louisville, as well as Merrillville and South Bend, especially when the Statler Brothers, Oak Ridge Boys, or Gaithers were in town. He was a very active person and big IU and Notre Dame fan. His hobbies included watching Notre Dame football, watching IU and Notre Dame basketball, watching politics on television (most of all, C-SPAN, Fox News, and other news channels), and watching old TV shows like Andy Griffith, I Dream of Jeannie, Sanford and Son, Bonanza, and Gunsmoke, as well as many others. He also enjoyed going to Barnaby's with his brother, Jim, and taking pizza to Jim's house to watch ballgames on the big screen TV. Most of all, he enjoyed taking care of his brother, Brian, and making sure that all of Brian's medical and other needs were being met.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Carl Tamke, who died in a drowning accident on Aug. 4, 1963, at the age of seven. He is survived by his brothers, Brian Tamke of Valparaiso and James Tamke of South Bend. He is also survived by his aunt, Hildegarde Nikoley of Bridgman, Michigan, and several cousins throughout the Midwest and other states.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. The funeral, officiated by Reverend Gregory Fiechtner of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, will be held in the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 20th. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
