James Lee Collins
August 13, 1949 - July 18, 2026
James Lee Collins passed away on July 18, 2026, at the age of 76 from a hard fought illness. He was born on August 13, 1949, in South Bend, Indiana, to Lee and Jean (Ashley) Collins.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971, attaining the rank of Specialist Four (SP4). During his military service, he served in Vietnam with honor. He received several Army Commendation Medals and a Bronze Star with Valor.
While serving in the Army, James married Kay Vollmer on March 14, 1970. Together they shared a family of three children who survive him along with their spouses: Shelley (Timothy) Ebersol, Sarah (James) Schaefer, and Scott Collins. He was the proud Papa of many grandchildren, Victoria (Michael) Namisnak, Bradley Ebersol, Halie Ebersol, Alexander Ebersol, Loki Schaefer, Zedediah Schaefer, Cecilia Schaefer, and Papa-great of seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy.
He is also survived by his sisters, Linda Steinhoffer; Judy (John) Paczesny; Joyce (Tim) Wheeler; and Patty (John) Hanson. He was preceded in death by both his parents and his brother-in-law, Vic Steinhoffer.
Following his military service, James spent many years working as a Teamsters Local 364 truck driver. During his career he drove for SB Freight and several other trucking companies. He retired after 38 years of truck driving. He was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family. He was a proud member of the first graduating class (1967) of LaSalle High School. He was also a proud member of the Goldwing Road Riders Association.
A visitation for James will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM, in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W 8th, St. Mishawaka. The funeral service will take place the next day, Tuesday, July 28, 2026. At 10:00 AM, also in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that donations be made to Dr. Otis Bower Veteran House , 2669 Cold Spring Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46222.
