The Lasting Legacy 

LeRay Conroy Shurn, (66) born March 5, 1953 departed this life on April 12, 2019 in Zion, IL where he received treatment from Cancer Treatment Center of America which he spoke highly of.

LeRay was born and raised in South Bend, IN and graduated from LaSalle High School. Soon after graduation he pursued a 14-year military career with the United States Marines where he retired as a Drill Instructor.  LeRay later pursued a career with the United States Navy as a Transporter, where he transported high profile military officials and Dignitaries on and off the military base.  

Before serving his country, he served as a Boy Scout Leader during his youth where he developed a strong commanders voice and tone that equipped him for military service.  Throughout his military career, LeRay received many awards of recognition for his military achievements.  He went on to earn his Associate Degree from Southwestern College in San Diego, CA; where he developed an entrepreneur spirit for landscaping which he loved and enjoyed before becoming ill.  LeRay was a true Marine in heart and spirit who took pride in serving his country and others.       

He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church while living in South Bend. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Elizabeth Lewis from South Bend on December 28,1974.  They were married 41 years before she transitioned in 2015.

LeRay leave behind his son LeRay Jr. (Ray) Chula Vista, CA, his father Eles Otto Shurn Jr., Cassopolis, MI, paternal grandmother Addie B. Shurn, South Bend, IN  Sisters; Shelia (Allen) Slade, Indianapolis, IN, Theresa Shurn McNeely, Park Forest, IL, Barbara Shurn (Donnie Sr) Meeks, Benton Harbor, MI, Yulanda Shurn (Kenny Sr) Williams, Merced, CA, Brothers: Eles Otto Shurn III (Deanna), South Bend, IN, Gregory A. Shurn Sr (Dorothy Weaver), Chicago, IL  and DeWayne A. Shurn, South Bend, IN, along with a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will all miss him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Elizabeth Shurn, his mother Helen Francis Shurn, sister Alice Marie Shurn, paternal grandfather Eles Otto Shurn Sr. and maternal grandparents Hilton Richard Sr. (Lillian) and Eleanor Richard. In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Gateway for Cancer Research 500 E. Remington Road, Schaumburg, IL 60174

 

A Celebration of Life is will take place 11:00 AM Monday, April 22, 2019 at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church; viewing one hour prior. Final resting will be next to his wife at Miramar National Cemetery in CA.
