SOUTH BEND - Nikki Michelle Gilkey Byron, 52, of South Bend, Indiana, formerly of San Jose, California, for over 20 years and returned to South Bend over a year ago, passed into God's arms on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, after an extended illness. She was born on February 12, 1961, to Juanita and the late William Gilkey Jr.

On October 8, 1994, she married Owen D Byron in Lake Tahoe, who survives. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Allegra Marie Byron; her mother, Juanita Gilkey; sister, Carolyn (Larry) Powell; brother, John Jackson Jr. of South Bend; brother-in-law, Brian Smith of California; and sisters-in-law, Vicki Byron, Candice Thompson, Ramona Byron and Lisa Byron of Georgia. She is also survived by aunts, Denoris Jackson of Mishawaka, IN, and Corrine Ross of South Bend; an uncle, Joe Dukes; special cousins, Lynn Roper of Portland, OR, and Gayle (Julian) Renfro of Cincinnati, OH, Thomas, Timothy and Jacqueline Jackson of South Bend; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends who loved her dearly.

Nikki graduated from LaSalle High School and attended airline school to become a travel agent. She later received her associate degree in Hospital Management and was employed with the South Bend Clinic for the past year. Nikki loved sports; she used to coach and referee volleyball and was a life guard for many years. She was preceded in death by her father, William C. Gilkey Jr.; mother-in-law, Altylin Smith; her grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held for Nikki on September 27, 2014, at 3:00 pm at Alford's Mortuary.
