Kathleen L. (Lowman) Szajko, 76, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 5:20 p.m. Friday, July 17, 2026, in the Raclin House in Mishawaka, Indiana. Kathleen was born on July 6, 1950 in South Bend, Indiana to James Grant and Cecelia Agnes (Guentert) Lowman.
Kathleen was a 1969 graduate of LaSalle High School and received an Associate Degree in Accounting from the South Bend College of Commerce. She was employed with Koontz Wagner for 6 years before becoming a stay at home mother and dedicated volunteer for the South Bend Community School Corporation.
After her children graduated she was hired as a library paraprofessional and retired in February 2016. On April 16, 1977 she married William Szajko, who preceded her in death in 2017. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Szajko; both parents; two sisters, Martha Cudney and Barbara Evans; and her brother, Ray Lowman. Kathleen is survived by her son, John Szajko of South Bend, Indiana; her grandson, Keegan Szajko; and two sisters, Janet (Mark) Williams of Walkerton, Indiana and Elizabeth “Betty” (Dean) Woodcox of South Bend, Indiana.
Kathleen was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, their Altar and Rosary Society and Parish Council. She enjoyed reading and baking. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 23, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend Indiana, where a rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 10:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Friday, July 24, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial Contributions should be directed to St. John the Baptist Church.
