SOUTH BEND - Edward Louis Benassi, 57, of South Bend, died unexpectedly at 1:05 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2009, in Memorial Hospital. Ed was born January 31, 1952, in South Bend, to the late Josephine (Vogt) and Geno L. Banassi, and was a lifetime area resident.
On August 21, 1976, in Kendallville, IN, he married Cynthia Durbin, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Novie Benassi of South Bend; and two brothers, Richard (Rose Ann) Benassi of Mishawaka and John Benassi of South Bend.
Ed was devoted to his family. He was very proud of his wife, a special education teacher at Clay Intermediate Center, and his daughter, a special education teacher at Monroe Primary Center. He was very fond of his "granddogs," Toby and Tia. Ed loved to watch sports. He was an avid IU, NASCAR and White Sox fan. He often enjoyed taking road trips to football games at Ball State and IU with his wife and daughter. He was a member of the O'Brien Fitness Center and the YMCA. He was actively involved in youth sports in the South Bend Community School Corporation. He coached girls' basketball, softball and, more recently, volleyball. He was involved in sports at Hay Elementary School, Jackson Middle School, Marshall Intermediate Center and Greene Intermediate Center. Ed loved listening to music and sitting out on the front porch waving at cars driving by.
He will greatly missed by his entire family and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 2nd, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Rev. James Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday, October 1st, in the funeral home.
