SOUTH BEND - Gary Hammond Fulton was born December 11, 1956, in Buffalo, New York, to the union of James William Fulton and Shirley Rebecca Fulton. He moved to South Bend, Indiana, in 1969.
After graduating from LaSalle High School in 1976, he enlisted in the United States Navy.
After leaving the Military Service, he attending the Indiana University Purdue of Fort Wayne, Indiana, earning an Associate Degree as a paralegal. Gary was employed by Uniroyal for eight years. He was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service for twenty-nine years and eleven months to date.
As a child, he became involved in Arts and Music. Music was his passion. He began playing the guitar in 1968. In 1971, he enrolled in the South Bend Conservatory of Music to learn to read, write, and eventually compose music for a period of three years. Gary played the drums, lead guitar and bass guitar, switching exclusively to the bass guitar in 1973. Having played the bass guitar for forty-two years, he was a master musician. Gary played R&B, classical, hip-hop, and jazz music, but through his family influence, he became the most passionate about reggae music.
Gary created the first publicly recognized reggae band in South Bend, Indiana. The first band was known as "Third Eye Reggae Band." Gary also led and performed with bands of all genre. Gary enjoyed watching football, playing music, and helping family and others in his time away from work.
His favorite football team in the NFL is the Buffalo Bills.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Jean (Green) Fulton; father, James William Fulton; brother, Guy Alan Fulton; and sister, Berth Lee Baldwin.
Gary leaves behind to cherish his memory one daughter, Fatimah (Jennifer) Abdi Resaq-Mohamed (Husband Abdul-Shakur Mohamed) from Baltimore, Maryland; two grandchildren, Saiid Mohamed of Buffalo, NY, and Saudii Amiina of Buffalo, NY. His mother, Shirley Rebecca Fulton of South Bend, Indiana; two brothers, Theodore Fulton (Aaron) and James Fulton (Rose) of South Bend, Indiana. Two sisters, Tenika Cooper from Yazoo City, Mississippi, and Justine Bailey of Buffalo, NY. A special daughter, Danielle Marshall of Austin, Texas. A niece, Jamillah Fulton of South Bend Indiana. A nephew, Jahmad Fulton (Vanessa) of South Bend, IN, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many other family members.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2015, at Pentecostal Cathedral COGIC, with viewing occurring from noon to 1:00 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to Alford's Mortuary.
