PORTLAND, IN - Everett D. Steen age 83, 722 North Franklin Street Portland passed away Friday at River Terrace Estates in Bluffton, Indiana. He was born in Portland December 26, 1929 the son of Floyd and Ema (Hudson) Steen.

He was an educator for thirty two years in South Bend Community Schools. He received a Masters Degree from Ball State in biological science. He taught in the following schools, Madison Twp. School, Lincoln Junior High, Washington High School and LaSalle High School.

In South Bend he very much enjoyed spending time with his good friends Frank and Cece Matthews.

He served three years with the U.S. Army and achieved rank of a Sergeant. He had duty in Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., Freiberg Kaserne Frankfort, Germany, LaChapelle France in the 34th General Hospital where he was a laboratory technician.

He attended several universities including University of California at Berkeley, Kansas State University and Loretto Heights College in Denver. He was a member of the Lions Club, Optimist Club, Jay County Historical Society, Dunkirk Elks, Museum of the Soldier, American Legion, VFW, DAV, Amvets, 40 & 8 and Eagles Lodge. He was guardian of his Aunt Taleen for eight years and helped take care of his Aunt Marjorie. I tried to be good to the whole family. The First Baptist church meant a lot to my mother and I am grateful for all the nice things they did for her. I never forgot the kindness you showed her especially Mabel Beard and Mary Ann Caster. I never lived a perfect life, but like President Truman said "I did my Damnedest." And as Bishop Sheen said " You should say to the Lord---Jesus have mercy."

He is survived by many cousins including Pat Armstrong of Portland.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the First Baptist Church with Dr. Ronald Ross presiding. Burial will follow in the Center Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.
