Mr. Frederick “Fred” Prince, 69, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2021 at his residence in South Bend. Mr. Prince was born on March 28, 1952 to Leroy and Gladys (Beatty) Prince.

Fred was a lifelong resident of South Bend and the oldest of five children. He received his formal education from both Central High School and LaSalle High School, graduating with the LaSalle Class of 1971. While still in high school, Fred was employed by the United States Postal Service, beginning in 1969. Throughout his career, Fred was an active member of the American Postal Workers Union, where he held many positions. Eventually, this led him to becoming the first African American to hold the title of American Postal Worker Union President in the state of Indiana. He was faithfully employed with USPS for 40 years, before retiring in 2008.

While enrolled at LaSalle High School, Fred met the former Jeannette Denny, who became his best friend and the love of his life. Fred enlisted in the United States Air Force in August of 1971, proudly serving his country before receiving an honorable discharge in December 1973. On April 27, 1974, Fred and Jeannette were united in marriage. Together, they raised three daughters, or as Fred referred to them, “Little Jeannettes”.

Fred accepted Christ at an early age. He was an altar boy at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church and later joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as president of the usher board. He was also the Sunday School Superintendent, Marriage Ministry Team Leader and in October of 2010, he began his role as an ordained deacon.

Fred was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his loving wife of 47 years, M.Jeannette (Denny) Prince of South Bend, Fred is also survived by his children: daughters Patrisse NaShaun Prince, Pethane Nichole Prince and Para NaNiece Prince; two grandsons, Mikel Ahmaad Prince and Andrew Michael Shear; siblings Jerome (Carolyn) Prince, LeGay (Willis) Holmes, Sondra (Jim) Chamber and Annette Prince; god children LaRicka Ross, Jerron and Jerra Jamerson, Sanedra Crumbley, Kerrington Shorter JyShawnna Moore, Cambrey and Cambrin Whitfield and Charles Coleman Jr; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

Fred was preceded in death by both of his parents, Leroy and Gladys (Beatty) Prince, as well as a son, Michael Jerome Shear.

Services for Mr. Frederick Prince will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 1826 N. Olive Street, South Bend, IN 46628. Friends may call on the family for visitation from 4-8:00 PM on Friday, September 10, 2021 at Palmer Funeral Homes - West Chapel, 2702 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN 46628, as well as for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial with military honors to follow services on Saturday at Highland Cemetery. Pastor Ray Owens will officiate. Online expressions of sympathy may be left at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
