In Memory
Iris J. (Haag) Lehman
November 29, 1949 ~ March 12, 2025 75 Years Old
Iris J. Lehman, a beacon of love and nurturing, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025, in Mishawaka, IN, at the age of 75. Born on November 29, 1949, in South Bend, IN, to the late Alva G. and Mary (Christensen) Haag, Iris was a lifelong resident of the area, deeply rooted in her community and cherished by all who knew her.
Iris was a proud graduate of LaSalle High School, where she formed many lifelong friendships and laid the foundation for her future endeavors. After graduation, she dedicated many years of service to the University of Notre Dame Foodservice, where she was not only a valued employee but also a beloved figure among the students. Her work there was more than a job; it was an extension of her innate ability to care for others, especially the young people she considered part of her extended family.
In her personal life, Iris's heart was always full as a devoted wife to her husband, Larry Lehman, and a loving mother to her children, Jennifer L. (James) Pauwels of Lake City, FL, Heather A. Lehman of South Bend, IN, Erik P. (TaNeisha) Lehman of Elkhart, IN. and Mark DeHart of South Bend, IN. Her role as a mother extended beyond her own children, as she was a natural caregiver who also looked after her husband with unwavering dedication. Iris's love and care knew no bounds, and her family was her greatest joy.
The family circle included her cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Iris (Jean), Tierra, Trinity, and Tayah, Alex as well as her great-grandson, Alex Jr. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and she in theirs. Iris was also a sister to five sisters and four brothers, with one brother preceding her in death. Her siblings, along with her children and grandchildren, will forever remember her as the family's cornerstone.
Iris's interests were as nurturing as her personality. She found solace and joy in gardening, tending to her plants with the same care she gave to her family. Her love for travel took her to Europe, where she embraced new cultures and experiences with the same enthusiasm she approached life. She was an incredible cook and it was easy for her to put together a wonderful meal. Iris's smile was a source of light and comfort, capable of brightening any room and lifting the spirits of those around her.
A daughter, wife, and mother of soldiers, Iris held a special place in her heart for those who served. Her pride in her family's military service was matched only by her commitment to supporting them in every way she could. Her home was a haven, not just for her family, but for anyone in need of motherly love and warmth.
Iris's legacy is one of unconditional love and selfless care. Her impact on the lives of the students at Notre Dame and her extended family will be felt for generations to come. She was the embodiment of a loving spirit, and her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A memorial service for Iris will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Iris’ name to Autism Awareness. Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com
