Curtis J. Bethany Sr.

SOUTH BEND - Elder Curtis J. Bethany, Sr., a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, adoring son, godfather and good friend passed from this life to eternal peace on June 1, 2011 after an extended illness. Elder Bethany, 58 was a long time resident of South Bend, IN. He was born in Memphis, TN on April 1953.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his beloved wife of 30 years, Marilyn Bethany of South Bend; his sons, Robi Minies and his fiancée, Tracey of Dallas, Texas, Curtis, Jr., and Christopher Bethany both of South Bend; two grandsons, Christian and Alex, both of Dallas, TX.; his dear mother, Louise Bethany; grandfather, James Beadin; a special god-daughter, Kaili Faith McGhee all of South Bend; his longtime friend, Stanley Steed of Florida along with a host of other relatives and friends.

He graduated from LaSalle High School in 1970 and attended Indiana University and Indiana Vocation Technical College. His most recent accomplishment occurred in 2010 when he graduated from C.H. Mason Bible College and became an Ordained Elder in the Church of God in Christ.

Elder Bethany was employed by AM General in Mishawaka for 10 years and later held the position of Computer Analyst at Associates Corporation in South Bend for 10 years. He believed fervently in Matthew 7:12, "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you," (TNIV). Elder Bethany was an avid chess player and a Scrabble player. He did not like to lose and seldom did. He also enjoyed coin and stamp collecting. His first love, however, was the study of the Word of God. He was a former member of Elizabeth Memorial Church of God in Christ where he served as a deacon and a trustee. Elder Bethany was a faithful member of Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ under the pastorate of Superintendent Leroy W. Sutton, Sr. He served as Deacon, Minister, Elder, Anniversary Committee Member, Sunday School Teacher and Member of Outreach Ministry at JJC.

Elder Bethany was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Bethany and grandmother, Lucille Beadin.

Donations and contributions may be sent to the Center for Hospice and/or the American Kidney Foundation. Home Going Celebration Services for Elder Curtis J. Bethany, Sr., will be held at 12 p.m., on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ with burial following at Highland Cemetery. Viewing will take place at the church one hour prior to services.
