In Memory
Christopher M. Egan
Christopher M. Egan, aged 68, passed away at home after a hard-fought battle with lung cancer on May 16, 2024 in South Bend, Ind. Born in Indianapolis on July 26, 1955, to the late Geraldine J. (Kunkel) Egan and Charles F. Egan, Chris was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and a loyal friend. His sense of humor, sparkling eyes, and wicked dance moves brought light to the lives of everyone he met. Chris was the life of the party.
The legendary stories of Chris’s antics growing up are too numerous to recount and have resulted in many lifelong friendships. Chris proudly served in the US Navy as the ship meteorologist aboard the USS Oklahoma City, where he developed the meticulous attention to detail he applied to home and lawn care. Chris enjoyed a successful career at Basney BMW as a sales manager, where his genuine connection with people and strong work ethic were his trademarks. He was an avid golfer, a sports fanatic, and loved Notre Dame football.
He was married to the love of his life, Gayle (Swank) Egan for 45 years. Together, they raised three daughters: Kristin (Jeremiah) Hall of Chicago, IL, Kara (Todd) Vogel of Grand Rapids, MI, and Katie (Greg) Howard of Greenville, NC. A natural with kids, he was a playful grandfather (Bompa) to Jack, Nolan, Henry, Nora, Vivian, and Ellie, all of whom will carry on his legacy of living life to the fullest.
He is survived by his wife, daughters, grandchildren, brother in law Joe Burnette, his nieces Nicole Brunette and Noel Klien, and his nephew Ryan Egan. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Michael, Richard, and Tim Egan, and Peggy Burnette.
Visitation for Chris will be held from 10:00 a.m.–noon on Wednesday, May 22 at Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635, with services at noon. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery with military funeral honors.
