James L. Dunn

May 9, 1951 - May 1, 1977

The body of James L. Dunn, 25, of 1834 Wilson, was recovered from the St. Joseph River, near the LaSalle Bridge, shortly before 7 a.m. today.

Firemen found the body snagged in brush after County Police Officer David Nufer saw the body as he was driving over the bridge. He notified the Fire Department.

Dunn and Cindy Funk, 19, of 908 Leland, drowned in the river Sunday afternoon when they were tossed out of a rubber raft that they were attempting to ride over the dam by Century Center. Miss Funk’s body was recovered Friday morning.

Dunn was born May 9, 1951, in South Bend and was a lifetime resident of the area. He was employed at the Clark Equipment Co., Buchanan. A LaSalle High School graduate, he attended the University of North Dakota on a baseball scholarship, where he was affiliated with Sigma Nu fraternity. He was a member of the South Bend Turners Club.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Dunn Sr., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Powell of South Bend and Mrs. Sally Gustke of Montgomery, Ala.

A memorial mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Robert Yast, pastor, officiating. The body will be cremated and buried in Highland Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Bend Art Center.

The Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson, is in charge of arrangements.
