Sandy Kay Kytta

Sandra Kay Kytta
Oct. 26, 1959 - May 25, 2016

MISHAWAKA - Sandra Kay Kytta, 56, of Mishawaka, passed unexpectedly in her home on Thursday, May 25, 2016. Sandy is survived by her lovingly eternal lifelong soulmate, James Leda of Mishawaka, devoted sister, Judith Fansler of Mishawaka, loyal brother, Jeffrey Kytta (Cheryl Steele, fiancée) of Aurora, IL, big brother, James (Rinthia) Kytta of South Bend, and dedicated niece, Jessica Fansler, as well as many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Oswald O. and Josephine (Polino) Kytta, Aunt, Marjorie Greenawalt, Aunt, Mary (Ray) Nichols, and brother-in-law, Guy Fansler.

Sandy cared about others. She devoted her professional life to the unfortunate. She was passionate about helping the mentally and physically challenged children that she loved in her 20-year career at NISH (Northern Indiana State Hospital). Sandy would often bring some of the children home with her, proudly introducing the children to everyone she met. In her second career, Sandy worked for 16 years with underprivileged youth as a Juvenile Corrections Officer for the State of Indiana. She loved helping the inmates with their direction in life and she was instrumental in their well-being with her support of unconditional love.

Sandy gained respect by giving it. Once, she surprised the juveniles with a creative Rap that was appreciated by even the hardest inmate. Sandy soon discovered, however, that the bonds she had created with her coworkers proved to be her most meaningful. In 2014 Sandy was honored with a lifelong state service award presented by Governor Mike Pence.

Sandy loved life and it was most evident when she traveled. Travel with her family especially made her glow. Never one to decline the most challenging of travel adventures, Sandy conquered adversities with determined courage. When Jim couldn't make the boys' “Strenuous” rated hike in the Smokies, Sandy jumped at the chance to go in Jim's place. Once she reached the waterfall after miles of climbing strenuous rocks and forging strenuous creeks, Sandy felt as if she had conquered the Great Smoky Mountains. Of her many travels, Sandy especially enjoyed her family trip out West and the time she helped orchestrate a road trip for her parents to Mackinac Island and to her father's childhood home of Bessemer, Michigan.

Sincerely devoted to her faith, Sandy looked forward to being with her Savior Jesus Christ. She loved to pray for others and she would often, unbeknownst to the traveler, slip a St. Christopher prayer card into a loved one's bag for their journey. Sandy felt safer if God traveled with her family. She is now traveling in God's heavenly arms.

Services will be held at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 31, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. On Wednesday, June 1, 2016, a viewing will be held from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, with funeral services to follow immediately at 1:00 PM.

Sandy's final resting place will be next to her mother and father at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN.
