Darlene E. Ready

Darlene Elizabeth Ready, of Niles, Mich., loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend, departed this life for a better one at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind., of injuries she received from a car/pedestrian accident. She was 32 years old. Darlene was born in South Bend on Nov. 22, 1966, to George and Marjorie Ready. She grew up in South Bend and graduated from LaSalle High School in 1985.

She moved to Benton Harbor, Mich., with her family in 1987 and was employed for several years at Gateway Sheltered Workshop in Berrien Springs. In 1990 she moved to Niles with her family and was employed at Country Bake Shop in South Bend. In 1998 Darlene joined the Independent Living program through Open Door/Riverwood and fulfilled a life-long dream of living in her own home. She worked for a short time at Burger King in Niles. Darlene had recently started pursuing another longtime dream of going to college when she started classes a at Southwestern Michigan College in Niles.

Darlene was a member of St. Mark C Catholic Church in Niles and was a member of the Christian Women's group there. She also volunteered her time to the religious education program at St. Mark. Darlene was president of the Independent Thinkers Club for the past two years and had previously served as the group's secretary/treasurer.

Darlene leaves to cherish her memory her father and step-mother, George and Virginia Ready of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two sisters, Cheryl Ann (Michael) Phillips of Niles and Marcia Ready of LaPaz, Ind.; two brothers, George, Jr., and Steven, both of Niles; two nephews, Christopher and Corey Miller, both of Niles; and a host of family and friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Russell; and by her mother, Marjorie Ready in 1995.

Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. (Indiana time) today in the Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. (Indiana time) on Monday, Sept. 20, in St. Mark Catholic Church, 3 North 19th St., Niles. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka. Following graveside services, the family will receive friends in the St. Mark Parish Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Church or to the charity of the donor's choice.
