Alphonso Smith - Class Of 1975 VIEW PROFILE

Alphonso Smith

Alphonso ‘Fonz” Smith was born November 10, 1955 to the union of Wilford and Almarie Smith (Mainer) in South Bend, IN.

Alphonso graduated from LaSalle High School in 1975. During his high school career, he was the manager for the varsity basketball team. He then worked for the South Bend Parks Department for 15 years and the Western Ave. Goodwill Industries for 22 years.

Alphonoso was also known for playing the bongos in the famous hit band known as Congressional Funk. Anyone who knew Fonz knew you could find him riding his bike with one of his stylish hat and bandana combos.   

On Thursday, July 8, 2021 he passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilford and Almarie Smith (Mainer), his two brothers, Carl Mainer and Richard Smith (Davene).

Those left to cherish his love and memories are his sister, Elaine Smith, his two sons, Raheem (Janell) and DeShawn Smith, and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his 18 grandchildren and a host of family and friends.

Alphonso shared an unbreakable bond with his two nieces Elisha and Natasha Smith and his great nephew Farrell Wilson, IV., “his partner.”

Gary Heard and Alphonso shared a brotherhood that stood the test of time. The family wants to extend the utmost gratitude to Gary Heard for always being there for Alphonso during all his ups and downs.
