James R. St. Clair, known affectionately as Jim to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2024, in Granger, at the age of 71. Born on July 16, 1953, in South Bend, Jim was a man of integrity, warmth, and dedication, whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.
Jim was the beloved husband of Sandra St. Clair, whom he married in December of 1978 in Mishawaka. Their loving partnership was a cornerstone of his life until Sandra’s passing on June 12, 2017. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Stacey (John) St. Clair, and stepdaughter, Laurie Savarese. Jim’s legacy continues through his five grandchildren, Lindsey (Levi), Madisen (Daniel), Connor, Cameron, and Landon, as well as his great-grandchildren, Mason, Paige, Reece, and Jaxton, who brought him immeasurable joy.
He was born to the late John L. St. Clair and Jackie (Ott) St. Clair and was a caring brother to Mary Jane (Terry), Phil (Debbie), and John Daniel (Tammy). Jim was preceded in death by his stepson, James (Jimmy) Savarese, and his brothers, Tom and Jerry St. Clair. His family remembers him as a pillar of strength and love, a man who always put his loved ones first.
For 36 years, Jim dedicated his skills to AM General as a mechanic and painter, where he was respected by his colleagues for his expertise and work ethic. His commitment to his craft was paralleled by his involvement in the United Auto Workers (UAW), where he stood in solidarity with his fellow workers, advocating for their rights and well-being.
Jim was also an enthusiastic member of the National Corvette Restoration Society (NCRS), where he shared his passion for classic cars with like-minded enthusiasts. His meticulous attention to detail and appreciation for automotive history were evident in every project he undertook. In his leisure time, He could often be found in his garage, tools in hand, working on a new restoration project or imparting his knowledge to his grandchildren, whom he adored.
Some of his favorite memories were made at Lake Michigan in the summer months where he would enjoy the beach and fishing. Jim also loved to cook. He always had delicious dishes ready for family when they came in town to visit. Whether it was his famous blueberry pancakes, slow cooked roast, homemade chicken noodle soup, or just throwing something on the grill, he enjoyed the conversations and memories that were made around the dinner table.
Jim was a great storyteller with a remarkable personality. He was witty and could always make you laugh. If you were in Jim’s presence you had a smile on your face. His love for his family was the driving force in his life, and his guidance and wisdom will be deeply missed.
