Benjamin Francis Hoevel

Benjamin Francis Hoevel, 90, of South Bend, IN passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend.    He was born on October 20, 1921 in Fort Wayne, IN to Benjamin W. and Marie Ursula (Steib) Hoevel.  He married Donille Stembel on June 5, 1953 in Pierceton, IN.

                                                                                                                                    

Ben is survived by his wife, Doni of South Bend, IN and four daughters, Ann (Dave) Skirvin , Claire Lee Hoevel, both of Indianapolis, IN, Kim (Gary) Lee of Kalamazoo, MI and Amy Hoevel of Hamilton, OH; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.  He was preceded in death by brothers, Henry Hoevel and Rev. Robert Hoevel; sisters, Madeline Adams and Helen Berghoff.

 

Ben proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II from Sept 1942- Sept. 1946 and the Korean War from Feb. 1951-Feb. 1952.  He attended school at New Haven High School, Ball State and post graduate at Indiana University-Bloomington and Dartmouth.  Ben retired in 1987 from the South Bend Community School Corporation as a United Sates History teacher and head of the Social Studies Department at LaSalle High School.  He coached baseball at LaSalle High School and basketball and baseball at Oliver and Monroe Junior High Schools.  He also worked at the South Bend Public Library before and after retiring.  For many years, Ben counted money for St. Matthew Cathedral where he and his family were parishioners.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Cathedral of St. Matthew, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, IN.  Military graveside services and burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery.   The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m.
