EDDIE A. FAULKENS

Aug. 23, 1942 - Sept. 12, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Eddie A. Faulkens passed away on September 12, 2012, in Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas, after a brief illness. He was born on August 23, 1942, in Meridian, Mississippi, to Arnold and Loma (Watson) Faulkens.

He moved to South Bend in 1965. Eddie graduated from Harris High in 1961 and Alcorn State University in 1965. Coming to South Bend, he worked at Indiana Bell and the South Bend Police Department (as a special detective in the Juvenile Bureau) before beginning his 33-year teaching career with the South Bend Community School Corporation.

Although he retired in 1999, he continued substituting until 2010. During his career he taught at Perley, Harrison, Madison, LaSalle, Adams, Dickinson and Washington. He was head football coach at Adams High from 1977 - 1979, and coached at LaSalle 1973-1976 and again from 1983 until his retirement. Eddie also coached basketball, wrestling and soccer during his teaching career. During his time working in the school corporation, Eddie was a teacher, coach, counselor and friend to his students whom he loved like his own kids. He took pride in the success he wanted for every one of them.

He coached the Western State Bank Yankees at Romy Hammes Little League for several years. Eddie was very active in NEA-SB, ISTA and ISTA-R. He was a faithful and active member of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. He served with the Mass Choir, 2nd Sunday Breakfast Kitchen Committee, Brotherhood, Men's Sunday School Class, Vacation Bible School staff, Funeral Kitchen Committee, and his Boy Scout/Cub Scout Pack #419. He loved kids as evidenced by the many "adopted" sons and daughters throughout the years. Eddie played softball in the parks and recreation league, and then umpired for several years throughout the Michiana area. He also worked the summer hockey camp at Notre Dame under Lefty Smith. His co-workers there affectionately called him "Forklift Faulkens," He loved watching Notre Dame football and being an armchair coach.

Eddie joined the LaSalle Landing Lodge #298 IBPOE of W in 1976 and remained a faithful member until his passing. He served in many capacities on the local, state and national levels of his beloved Elks. He was in Houston attending the National convention when he took ill. His goal was to make sure all the Brothers were following Elk rituals and protocol. Anytime he could, he would go up to Donell Lake to fish with his buddies, especially Melvin, Arton, Richard and, of course, Rollie. The freezer is still full of his catches.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Beverly (Kelly); sons, Robert (Phyllis) Derrick Sr., Brian and Christopher (Meghan); daughter, Andrea; grandchildren, Tia (Windell) Hill, Michael (Ashley) Faulkens, Tessa, Myles, Nigel, Liana, Derrick Jr., Anakin, Delaney and Ezekiel; great-grandchildren, Briane', Niles, Carvey, Katana and Malakai; three sisters, Audrey (Les) Sudbury, Shirley (Samuel) Bradford and Kathryn Gorden; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
