William Everett Moyer

April 6, 1942 ~ April 9, 2025 (age 83)

William E. "Bill" Moyer, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on April 9, 2025, at the age of 83. He was born on April 6, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Milford Bird and Eleanor Zurlinden. He was later adopted by the late William C. Moyer and Pauline (Kuglitch) Moyer. Bill’s life was one marked by enthusiasm, growth, and the blooming of deep-rooted relationships.

Bill found his life's love, Christine, and they united in marriage on August 28, 1965. Their enduring partnership was blessed with two children, Jennifer and Kurt. Jennifer found her match in Joseph Akers, while Kurt joined his life with Lisa Brankle Moyer. The family tree continued to flourish as Bill proudly embraced his role as a grandfather to Kathryn Rose Moyer and Grace Susan Akers, and as a great-grandfather to Olivia Grace Petty.

He is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Michael James Moyer, Patrick Moyer, Bonnie Swirdow, and Margaret Tessaro. Their lifelong bonds were a testament to the strength of family and the enduring ties that shaped his journey.

Bill was preceded in death by his birth parents, Milford Bird and Eleanor Zurlinden; his adoptive parents, William C. and Pauline (Kuglitch) Moyer; and his brothers, Charlie Joseph Moyer, Richard Moyer, Kenneth Mueller, Ronald Bird, and his sister, Nancy Stone.

A lifelong learner and devoted educator, Bill dedicated much of his life to teaching, instilling knowledge and curiosity in generations of students at LaSalle High School. His commitment to education reflected his deep belief in the power of learning to transform lives — a belief he carried with him into retirement.

In their retirement years, Bill and Christine discovered a shared passion for the natural world, embarking together on new hobbies that enriched their lives and deepened their bond. They became Master Gardeners during the winter of 1998, immersing themselves in horticulture through studies at Fernwood. Bill continued his education by earning his Advanced Master Gardener and Smart Gardener designations. This journey brought them not only a wealth of knowledge but also a vibrant community of friends who shared their love for tending the earth.

Their curiosity didn’t stop at the garden gate. Together, they joined the Fernwood Book Club, where they delved into a wide range of nature-themed literature. From stories of the Oregon Trail to engaging reads about wildlife like beavers, wolves, and coyotes, Bill and Christine found joy in exploring the natural world through the written word. These shared literary adventures enriched their retirement, deepening their bond and surrounding them with a like-minded community of fellow readers and nature lovers.

Bill and Chris also enjoyed walking in nature preserves and local parks, enjoying the natural beauty of each season. They were active members in several local hiking groups. Other members enjoyed Bill's lifelong learning and his shared knowledge of the world around him.

Bill's legacy is one of nurturing — both of the earth he so dearly cherished and of the relationships nourished by his warmth and guidance. Bill’s life was a testament to the beauty that can arise from planting seeds of love, knowledge, and kinship. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In keeping with Bill’s wishes, no formal services will be held at this time. Hahn Funeral home has been entrusted to handle the final arrangements.  There will be a celebration of his life at a local park at some point in the future.
