Annette F. (Ford) White

Sept. 30, 1920 – July 21, 2003

Annette Ford White, 82, of South Bend, Ind., passed away peacefully at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 21. She was a lifetime resident of South Bend. She lived at 1221 East Irvington for 48 years. She spent her remaining years at the “Acres,” a senior citizens residential facility, New Carlisle, Ind., under the loving care of its owner, Susan Lies, family and staff.

Annette was born Sept.30, 1920, in South Bend, to George and Florence Ford. Her parents preceded her in death.

On June 12, 1943, as Annette Ford, she married Eugene G. White in Fort Benning, Ga. Mr. White was stationed there in the military and their marriage took place just prior to his being sent overseas to serve in World War II. They were married for 46 years, until he passed away in 1989.

She is survived by two sons, E.G. (Sharon) White of Bloomington, Ind., and Dr. Daniel White (Nancy) of Mishawaka, Ind.; three grandchildren, Brett White of Bloomington, and Andrew and Alison White of Mishawaka. She also leaves behind her loving and loyal brother, G. Burt (Charlotte) Ford. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family, who affectionately referred to her as “Aunt Annie.”

She was a graduate of South Bend Central High School and received her B.A. in history in 1942 from her beloved alma mater, Indiana University. Mrs.White taught in the South Bend Community School Corporation for two different periods during her life.

The first was when her husband was overseas serving in the war.  She was at James Monroe school as the librarian.She reentered the teaching profession again, after her children were raised, at LaSalle High School, teaching English for 20 years.

She was a member of the South Bend Country Club for over 40 years, a member of Saint James Episcopal Church, a lifetime member of the I.U. Alumni Association and the I.U.Alumni Club of Saint Joseph County, and was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority at Indiana University. She was also involved in Junior League of South Bend, and Pan Hellenic of Saint Joseph County where she held various officer positions. 

She was an active member in the Indiana Bridge Club of South Bend. She loved all sports and sporting events especially when it was following I.U. athletic teams.She also enjoyed her time playing golf.

Her grandchildren will remember their “Nana” for her wanting them to pursue their higher education, her turtle collection, and cheering for I.U.

Friends may come for visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 23, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William, South Bend. Her funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Pastor Jamie Miller from Sunnyside Presbyterian Church will officiate the services. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for gifts to be given in her memory to the I.U. Foundation, P.O. Box 500, Bloomington, IN 47402, for the benefit of the Indiana University Athletic Department.
